ViewRanger has been announced by Nokia as a finalist in the Location Aware Applications category of the Nokia S60 3rd Edition Challenge, a global developer competition that will award the best new applications based on the S60 3rd Edition. The awards will be made October 17 in London at the Smartphone Show. Augmentra Ltd, the developer of ViewRanger, is the sole UK-based developer to be selected as a finalist.

Launched in December, 2005, the S60 3rd Edition Challenge, co-sponsored by Adobe and Forum Nokia, Nokia's global developer support program, is designed to drive development of innovative new applications for the S60 3rd Edition, based on the Symbian OS, which expands creative opportunities for developers of advanced mobile applications and services. The competition comprises four categories -- enterprise, music, Adobe Flash Lite and location-based applications.

The finalists were chosen on the basis of each entry's overall strength of concept and level of creativity, and its usability, aesthetic design and support for mobility.

Cycling Plus magazine, the biggest selling road monthly in the UK, says that ViewRanger "is any outdoor enthusiast's best friend" in their Bikeshop review and make ViewRanger a Cycling Plus Recommended Buy.

Cycling Plus say ViewRanger "marks the true cross-platform integration that we've been waiting for: GPS navigation and OS mapping on your mobile phone" and go on to say "In the kind of integration you'd hope for with a GPS on a smartphone, you can also take photos with it and place them as markers on the map". The review scores ViewRanger with 9 out of 10.
