Wainwright on BBC
posted by Mike Brocklehurst on Tuesday, February 27, 2007The BBC is currently showing several programmes about Wainwright, the author of the Lake District pictorial guides. The programmes were first shown on BBC4, then in April most are being shown on BBC2.
The first was an hour long programme "Wainwright - The Man Who Loved the Lakes". It is 100 years since he was born and this is a programme about his work, with interviews, clips from his past tv and radio programmes and plenty of scenery.
The other four programmes are a series called "Wainwright's Walks". In each episode Julia Bradbury (from Watchdog) climbs a fell, following a route from one of his books. The first programme features Haystacks, with some fantastic scenery including some aerially-shot film. Julia sits half way up Haystacks, trying to work out whether she can see Grasmoor or not, because the book only shows the view from the top. She really needs ViewRanger!
The other 3 shows feature Blencathra, Castle Crag and Scafell Pike, all are well worth watching (in my opinion).
